More skinny pants! I am feeling skinny pants right now. This Katherine Tilton pattern came out in the fall Vogue collection. It has some nice seam details. I'm a sucker for cool seaming.
The pattern calls for ponte, or a similar knit, but I used stretch woven and it worked great. I made a pair, tweaked the pattern, and made a second pair. Both pairs are black, but use very different fabrications and the second pair has contrast topstitching. The pattern features a cuff and some gathering in the back hem, but I omitted both.
Pair #1
For the first pair I used a stash fabric – a black poly/rayon/spandex pebbled crepe fabric called Crepe Couture suiting. This fabric has wonderful drape and might have been a better choice for a more trouser-like pant, but I think it worked quite well. Based on the finished hip measurement, I cut out a medium and sewed it up. However, I felt that there was too much fullness in the back of the pant, and then I remembered that in Vogue I usually cut a size smaller in back. Oops. The pants are still very wearable, mostly thanks to the drape of the fabric.Pant #2
I re-cut the back pattern to a size small, traced off the back crotch curve from my Style Arc Cassie pants, and cut out a second pair, this time using s beefy black stretch denim. For this pair I topstitched the seams using white Guterman topstitching thread.
I really like these pants! Both pair are so comfy!
I hope those of you who celebrate had a great Thanksgiving! I had a nice quiet day this year. I am looking forward to spending tomorrow with DD1, who flew home from university. We'll be in downtown SF, shopping and eating and then I take her back to the airport at 2am. I am loving the long weekend.

ReplyDeleteI like that that these looks like a nice, narrow pant on you. In the Vogue pattern photo they look too much like jeggings and that turned me off. Lovely job on these and love the sweater you're wearing with these. Is that a Shams-made piece?

Thanks, Helen. Yes, these are not skin tight, they are a slim fit, and very comfy! On top I am wearing a black Style Arc Debra Zebra turtleneck and, over that, a Barbara de Jounge jacket that I bought some time ago.
DeleteI am also a fan of the contrast topstitching. Lifts the pants to a new level - leaving the cuff off makes them sleeker looking as well.

ReplyDeleteWow! These look so much better than the ones in the pattern photo. And they look great on you. As I've mentioned before, I can't carry off the slim-legged pant look very well, but I've been seriously considered getting this pattern for the skirt.
ReplyDeleteThese both look great and I must try again with this pattern. I used some stretch woven also, but it had a strong vertical texture and looked terrible with the seaming. So, recycled and I moved onto my next project. Yours are wonderful!!

ReplyDeleteShams, you definitely are marketing this pattern well. The pattern photo looks like a jegging as Helen said, but your makes look like lovely narrow leg pants. I love both versions, with the crepe version looking more dressy, and the denimn version really fun. The seaming on these is great, and this style looks fantastic on you.

ReplyDeletebecause i made this pattern myself and it's even more awesome in person ;) You do a great job showing the versatility of this pattern. One can go all fun & funky by emphasizing the topstitching, or whip a pair of great fitting, very comfy 'go anywhere' pants. i made my pair with all the bells and whistles, because i thought they were the cutest things i'd see in years as soon as i saw the pattern!

Oh Shams I love your pants! I snapped up that pattern when it came out, mostly because of the cool skirt. Then I made my Style Arc Wallis pants - a "skinny" pants pattern - and even though I am not skinny they fit well and are so comfortable. I feel so cool when I wear them. So now I am going to give KT's pants with seams a shot. I love the seaming, esp because it's stylish but not gratuitous, as some lagenlook pants are! Brava!! And Happy Thanksgiving! (I thought it was Nov 29 so that's when I'm observing it!)

My body shape is the pretty much the opposite of yours, Sham, and I also found success with this pattern more or less out of the envelope... I love the slim, but not "binding", fit and the topstitching is such a fun detail! Thanks again for your wonderful post.
