Sunday Musings

Hey gang!

I've received a few emails from folks who were wondering what is up with my silence. It's nothing bad, just low productivity. Partly because of work. Or maybe I am so busy running on the elliptical that I have less energy for sewing.

In a couple weeks I am going on my annual sewing retreat, so I have been preparing some projects for that.

I do need some new clothes. Many of my current clothes are too big (I have now lost 8" in the bust) and I'm starting to feel frumpy in my clothing. But I hate altering. Today the outfit I wore included a top that was too large, so I maneuvered the fullness around to the back and tucked it into my skirt. I didn't take my sweater off. Desperate times... ;)

Did you see that Katherine Tilton has two new patterns in the Butterick offerings that came out last week? I especially like the top, Butterick 5881:

And though I am not often drawn to dresses, I think her dress pattern (5891) has some interesting possibilities:

Katherine has more to say about both patterns on her blog.

Have you been watching the Oscars? I enjoy the spectacle of the awards season. I had high hopes for Seth MacFarlane as host but have found him to be a bit cringe-worthy. Oh well, there is still much clothing to enjoy as well as the live singing. My favorite gown was a Versace worn by Halle Berry. I love the use of stripes!

I see some serious shoulder pads!

I hope you have a great week!

  1. Halle's gown was in my Top 5 for the evening. On the red carpet she said that she wanted something that looked Bond Girlish...I think she accomplished that. I'm actually enjoying the Academy Awards, I'm usually flipping channels by now!

I saw the new Katharine Tilton patterns and thought the top looked just like you. Congrats on the weight loss...so I guess we'll see some new pieces soon!

  2. Congrats on the weight loss.. losing 8 inches must have been a lot of hard work!! Great discipline, eh!

I hope you have a blast at your sewing retreat!

  3. I'm waiting for when you try the bias cut spiral pants in the latest Threads magazine. Interesting seaming and shaping from two tubes of fabric if one can wrap their heads around it ( which leaves me out for now).
Congrats on your weight loss too. :)

  4. Good luck with the weight loss. I'm on the weightwatchers treadmill too - I've also lost 3cms around the bust (Aussie speak for 8 inches) and found that a Vogue size 16 fitted straight out of the pack. Loved the Kathrine Tilton coat/shirt but that dress is frankly aweful.

  5. Congratulations on your weight loss!! that is a terrific result :) Predictably, I adore those new patterns... hehe, and after reading Gail's comment above I'm blushing! I guess I just have ahem, "artistic" tastes :D

  6. I missed the red carpet, but when Halle Berry walked down the stage, she took my breath away. I had to replay it for my husband so that he could see how fabulous she and those stripes were. Just like me ( in his wildest dreams). Roflmao!
Big congrats on your weight loss - you've been looking wonderful.

  7. Hi Shams, you've been missed! Congrats on your weight and inches lost! Such a good feeling, isn't it? Guess you'll have to make a new wardrobe now. :-D
I too, saw those new patterns and thought of you.

  8. thanks for sharing those cute patterns from Katherine Tilton. I love the fabrication and colors chosen for the dress. Congratulations on your health and fitness accomplishments.
Alas, I saw very little of the Oscars. The host was a little annoying and I lost interest.

  9. I too love the KT patterns with Butterick. I'm such a snob - I never order from Butterick. But I just did order those! You'll make something great out of both.

  10. I love that top in the Butterick pattern, definitely would look great on you and offers the opportunity to use some interesting fabric. I watched every minute of the Oscars - I kind of tune out the show and mostly focus on the gowns and jewelry. Perhaps to expected but I liked the go big or go home dress worn by Jennifer Lawrence - gorgeous.

I like the KT top, too.

  12. Wow! Great job on the weight loss program :) Your health SHOULD be a priority...and just think of all those great projects you'll have when you're sewing for your new size ;) Good luck!

I totally understand productivity...mine has been NIL as we're putting our house on the market and my "productivity" has centered around getting that ready! Hoping to knock some things out soon.

  15. What a great excuse for a new wardrobe! I liked Halle's dress, too. I also couldn't help but notice how many women were dressed like the Oscar statuette--long gold glittery sheathes.... LOL!

  16. Wow! 8"! That's fantastic, but I can only imagine how that must make you feel in your clothes! Great excuse for new ones, though!

  17. Love the close up shot of those shoulder pads. What a STUNNING dress. Marcy's patterns are always full of visually interesting lines - I can envisage both of those tops on you!
I'm the same - can't stand altering. I'd rather make something new!! And 8 inches - wow. That's amazing. Are you feeling better for it?
