Weekend Report

You are looking at pretty much the only sewing I got done today.

A welt pocket.

I silk screened the fabric in the wee hours - during a period of insomnia. I was inspired by Dixie's gorgeous welt pocket that she posted on Friday. Have you seen it?

You can read the construction details on her blog, With Needle and Brush. She has some mad creative skills, that one.

Diane Ericson has launched a new website. It's very slick. She is using the same URL as before, so any bookmarks to the high level page should still work. On her updated site, you can buy her custom designed fabrics, as well as her patterns and original artworks. Check it out! Even as I write this Diane and Marcy are at Design Outside the Lines in Santa Barbara, inspiring much creativity, I am sure.

DD2 dropped by yesterday. We spent hours discussing her senior project. (I learned a lot about Noam Chomsky in the process. I had studied his theories in college and was surprised to hear he is still alive and producing.)

The first thing she exclaimed on seeing my new hairdo is that I looked like Louise Brooks. (DD2 is a big fan of old films.) We googled Louise Brooks and there is a resemblance! (In the hair, anyway. I can't claim to have her smouldering sexiness.)

Have a great Monday!

  1. If you and your daughter are interested in Louise Brooks, there is a great fiction-based-on-fact book about her called "The Chaperone" by Laura Moriarty. It's a fast and very interesting read.

  6. LOVE the pockets! I've a lot of lovely linen in the line up for sewing soon and it would behave beautifully on welts... thanks for the inspiration. I'd also like to put in a vote for "The Chaperone" it's a very intriguing story. My book club read it last month and we had a rousing discussion! Hope you get to read it.

As a college freshmen I took a class called "Sociology of Conflict and War" and Professor Chomsky gave a us a lecture in one of our classes. Very impressive.

  14. A welt pocket? In my book that's equal to sewing an entire garment!

  16. Hey Shams, thanks so much for linking to my blog post! The pockets were a blast to make. Yours looks great, too! Did you use the Riffle screen? That's the one I used. I get a lot of mileage out of that image.
Thanks for the heads up on Diane's new web site. It's so dynamic now - a big improvement. Looks so inviting and inspiring!

    1. I don't think I have the Riffle screen, Dixie, though I can see I need it! I used Tiger Stripes, which has big bold stripes. I have it in the medium size. What size do you have the riffle screen in? The stripes are so dainty!

    2. My Riffle is the large size. The stripes are relatively fine.

  22. All of your gym buddies will be oooohing and aaahhhing over your new vest, Shams. It's a great look and the silkscreened zipper tape puts it in a class all its own. Very clever and very very kewl.
