Weekend Miscellanea

First, I want to thank you for all of your wonderful feedback on my Marcy Tilton dress! I am very happy with it and have three events in the coming week where I could wear it.

Second, a couple people have asked if I have had surgery, specifically a boob job. If you really knew me, you'd know how funny this thought is. I am a Numero Uno medical weenie. I pretty much avoid medical procedures when at all possible.

My smaller bust (9" smaller than last fall) is due to diet and exercise. I have also been asked to talk more about my weight loss process. I do plan to do a post on the subject, but am not quite ready yet. And I plan to do just one post, because I want to keep this as a sewing blog. So stay tuned.

Oh, and I still maintain that this is a very flattering dress. I think it makes me look smaller than I really do.

Third, I finally succumbed and ordered the Bold & Beautiful Easy-Sew Clothes: 15 Unstructured Designs That Fit and Flatter Every Shape, and Are Simple to Make by Habibe Acikgoz. I was holding off on buying it until I could see a copy, but I read so many enthusiastic reviews, I finally went for it.

This is a paperback book containing a number of flowy, loosely fitted Lagenlook designs. Right now I am interested in sewing more body conscious clothing, so I don't plan to use the patterns (included on a CD), but I can see incorporating some of the very interesting details into other garments, such as the funky pockets and shaped facings.

Finally, I have been really dithering on what to sew next. This isn't that unusual for me in the last year or so, but since 98% of my wardrobe is now too big and makes me feel frumpy, you'd think I'd be raring to make new clothes, but not so much. I have started doing some closet purging, on a small scale. I hope that this will loosen up the process a bit.

I am thinking that my next project might be another dress. Two dresses in a row. Is that going to weird you guys out too much?

It weirds me out a bit. ;)

  3. Two dresses in a row -- yes! Go for it. And I am so happy you are going to do a weight loss post -- just one is fine but I need to hear how you did it. You look great. The dress looked great !

  4. I am glad you are going to sew more body conscious clothing. When I saw the pic of the loose and flowing book I thought - nooooooooooo - not when she has that fab body to show off. 9 inches off the bust - congratulations on all your hard work.

That last dress - whether extra flattering or not - looked so spectacular on you - you really do need to make more slim fitting clothes.

Listen to me dictating to someone else what they should or shouldn't sew. Apologies - I am just so blown away by how great you are looking.

  5. Go for another dress. You look great and many people claim they are more comfortable than pants.

  6. that book looks wonderful and full of interesting details. I think I'd like wearing those loose and flowy clothes in the summer, made from linen. I am tempted :)

  8. You had so many comments when I finally read your last post, that I didn't add my 2 cents' worth at the time. You look wonderful. The dress looks wonderful. Somehow that dress just didn't grab me when I saw it first, but seeing it on you put it in a whole different perspective.
That book looks very interesting - I'll be looking to see the details that you use in your sewing. You always have such interesting ideas.

  9. If you want to make the Marcy dress again, I saw a version (sorry no picture) in navy that featured several different textured or tonal solids. You could also make the Marcy dress as a top and make a long straight skirt. Dresses are so much fun to make, but I find separates are what I wear most of the time.

  10. I love the fact that you are celebrating your "new" body (which has been there all along). You do realize that you are teeny, don't you? How about a fitted skirt-maybe one with a flounce or cascade? I wish I could pop over and sort patterns with you.

  11. Hope you have great fun developing a new wardrobe for the slim Shams! Will you be able to revise some of your previous pieces to fit your new shape? I'd hate to think of you having to give them all away!

And thanks for the positive review on the Habibe book. I also thought the styles were somewhat more baggy than I prefer but the interesting details are definitely worth the price of the book.

  12. I am thrilled that you are making dresses. The Shams interpretation of dresses is sure to be even more inspiring than your amazing trouser details -more scope per garment!

  13. I've been reading your blog ever since I discovered your uber busty post and enjoy your posts very much.

I don't get bored and would love to see you blog about some basics. Maybe I'm the only one - but I'm not terribly advanced. I'd love to see a post on how you sew a knit T shirt together for example. Even though it's a basic garment, it's interesting to me to see how the great ones do it.

I love to see all the details on fine sewing of simple garments. How do you sew your basic knit seams? What about the neck binding? Do you cover stitch?

I'm also encouraged that you need to narrow your shoulders. I have to do that too but I often wonder if I'm going about it the right way.

Please don't stop blogging - your blog rocks!

  15. I know exactly how it feels to have almost zero things hanging in the closet that actually fit. Such pressure! You have to choose the next project strategically so you can build on it to make a wardrobe that can be altered down to your target. Hopefully you won't gain back the weight like I did but I hadn't really intended to lose weight in the first place. You do look so completely marvelous!

  17. I am not big on that over sized layered look.I think that your fitted dress shows how fabulous we can look with something that fits so well. I am making it right now, though I added ease to the dress not having such a fabulous flat middle as you do. I think it's the same fabric that yours is as well and I am going to use black under it since like you, I don't have enough for the under layer and upper layers, so thanks for the tip and complete review.
You do look amazing even if you insist that it's the dress. Which says a lot about how flattering that dress is!

  18. I once read an item about how flattering cross wise stripes are and you've certainly proved it.
