Flannel Lined Cassie Pants

On Christmas morning I took a walk. My initial plan was to make the 3-mile trek to Stern Grove, one of my favorite destinations, but it was a really cold day. I hadn't expected it to be that cold and I wasn't dressed properly. I felt the cold right through my pants, and everywhere else except my head since I was wearing my new hat, a gift from DD1.

I cut my walk short and decided, on the way home, that I needed a pair of flannel lined pants. I decided to use the Style Arc Cassie skinny pant, which I had made before.

I really love this pattern. However, I realized that it's a size too big - I can grab several inches at the hips on my first pair. But that made it perfect for this project for two reasons. First, lining with flannel means adding more bulk. Second, the 100% cotton flannel doesn't stretch and the pattern is designed for a stretch woven, so you need more ease.

The stretch denim is left over from my Katherine Tilton skinny pant. This fabric is so nice - it's soft and malleable like buttah. I can't remember where I got it, as it's been in the stash for awhile. The flannel is from FabricMart, purchased about a year ago and machine washed and dried three times to remove all shrinkage. I topstitched the denim with white Guterman topstitching thread.

I left these pants intentionally long, so I could fold them up at the ankle and enjoy the contrast plaid flannel. I only worried about matching the plaid at the hem - I don't care if the plaid matches anywhere else as it's hidden from view.

These pants are so soft and snuggly! It's like wearing a hug. These are just what I wanted. I'm sure these will get lots of wear in the cold months ahead.

Right after I took the backyard pics, I put on a coat, hat and boots and headed to Stern Grove for a New Years Day walk.

And now, here are a few pics taken at Stern Grove!

You can rent the Little Yellow House for weddings and parties.
Throughout the summer they have free concerts at Stern Grove. Most people (like me) sit up in the trees, where the views are not so great, but it's still worth it for the music and the scenery.

  1. What satisfaction to experience a need, then immediately fill it with the best possible solution -- that's what sewists can do, and you've done so stylishly. You look great in your handmade clothes.

  4. Happy New Year, Shams! You look great in that new hat! Nice lined pants. I wear flannel lined jeans here in Michigan, where we get some really cold, miserable weather. They are very warm and feel good when you have to be in the elements.

  5. Flanel lined pants sound very comfy and practical for winter. The only piece of fashion advice I ever received from my mother was to look warm in winter and cool in summer. My mother would be proud of you!

  7. Good looking lined pants. I do have to chuckle a bit at your "cold" - ours has been in the 20's and I won't go out for a walk!! Great looking outfit.

  11. You just keep the pants inspiration flowing! I love your cozy jeans. I have made up both Vogue 8837 and 8859, since copying you seems to lead to good things. Will be blogging them soon (since I took photos of 8837 today). Your entire ensemble looks absolutely perfect in this post.

  12. Happy and cozy new year! Your pants idea is wonderful and one that I'm going to copy whn we head north. Thanks for the Stern Grove pics. I dated a fellow from the peninsula who took me there for a concert when I first moved to CA in 1980. He was just getting into tech stuff.....and is probably a retired gazillionaire by now. Glad to know it's still there and still fun.

And flannel-lined pants - oh yummy! I'm getting ready to make a new pair of fleece pants because my other pair is definitely getting worn a LOT this chilly winter! But now you have me thinking of flannel linings..... You're inspiring, as always :)

  18. I think the best things to sew are what you need as you will get so much mileage out of them. A great idea to line with the flannel. I wish it was cold here in Perth.....we have had 40c plus temps. I am on holidays and so want to sew but it's just too hot.By the way love the hat and new avatar.

  26. Another inspiring post. You have me thinking about flannel-lined pants, cuz it's cold here in NE OH...and I need some denim that's soft as buttah, too! I can see why you like to hike to Stern Grove! Love your new avatar!

  27. Happy warm & toasty New Year, Shams! I never considered making lined pants. I just wear heavy tights or long undies underneath! Yours are so nice though I might be tempted to copy. Love the peek of plaid at the cuffs.

  28. what a great idea, bit like wearing you pj's under your trousers - beautiful area for your walk - Happy New Year

  29. Nice...warm, cuddly and stylish!!! Something else good to have for cold days is Cuddl Duds. Soft on the inside, slippery on the outside...like a 2nd skin...you'd never know you had them on, even under jeans, except you don't feel the cold. They are not paying me to advertise!!!

  33. Now *I* want a pair of flannel-lined pants too, Shams, and I don't even go outside that much in the wintertime! You're always such an inspiration. Great job!

  34. This is why I just live in sweatpants in the winter...denim is too cold. Did you make the flannel lining the same size as the pants or a tad bigger since the main fabric was stretch?

    1. Hi Easily. I did make the flannel lining the same size, but because the flannel does not stretch, the pants do have a closer fit. But since the pattern was too large to begin with, it works. Adding a bit to the side seams of the lining would have provided more ease.
