Vogue 8837 - Two pair of Katherine Tilton pants

Uch. Where did these weeds come from?

More skinny pants! I am feeling skinny pants right now. This Katherine Tilton pattern came out in the fall Vogue collection. It has some nice seam details. I'm a sucker for cool seaming.

The pattern calls for ponte, or a similar knit, but I used stretch woven and it worked great. I made a pair, tweaked the pattern, and made a second pair. Both pairs are black, but use very different fabrications and the second pair has contrast topstitching. The pattern features a cuff and some gathering in the back hem, but I omitted both.

Pair #1

For the first pair I used a stash fabric – a black poly/rayon/spandex pebbled crepe fabric called Crepe Couture suiting. This fabric has wonderful drape and might have been a better choice for a more trouser-like pant, but I think it worked quite well. Based on the finished hip measurement, I cut out a medium and sewed it up. However, I felt that there was too much fullness in the back of the pant, and then I remembered that in Vogue I usually cut a size smaller in back. Oops. The pants are still very wearable, mostly thanks to the drape of the fabric.

Pant #2

I re-cut the back pattern to a size small, traced off the back crotch curve from my Style Arc Cassie pants, and cut out a second pair, this time using s beefy black stretch denim. For this pair I topstitched the seams using white Guterman topstitching thread.

I really like these pants! Both pair are so comfy!

I hope those of you who celebrate had a great Thanksgiving! I had a nice quiet day this year. I am looking forward to spending tomorrow with DD1, who flew home from university. We'll be in downtown SF, shopping and eating and then I take her back to the airport at 2am. I am loving the long weekend.

  1. So cute on you!

I bought this pattern and want to make it up soon--better for me than a true legging. I also bought the new pattern with the knee detailing.

  2. Ahhhh...gorgeous! I love the denimy one with the top-stitching, I will move this up in my queue...

  3. They look good on you. I especially love the contrast topstitching on the denim pair.

  4. I like that that these looks like a nice, narrow pant on you. In the Vogue pattern photo they look too much like jeggings and that turned me off. Lovely job on these and love the sweater you're wearing with these. Is that a Shams-made piece?

    1. Thanks, Helen. Yes, these are not skin tight, they are a slim fit, and very comfy! On top I am wearing a black Style Arc Debra Zebra turtleneck and, over that, a Barbara de Jounge jacket that I bought some time ago.

  5. I am also a fan of the contrast topstitching. Lifts the pants to a new level - leaving the cuff off makes them sleeker looking as well.

  6. Darn you - now I have one more pattern I have to add to my list of must-haves! LOL! I've been looking at this pattern and passing it by. Now I'm going to have to order it. What a nice job you did on both pair of these :-)

  9. I am so glad that you waste no time sewing up all the latest patterns. We get the benefit of your experience while sewing it. Just to say another of your patterns on my wish list.......

  10. Great results with both pair. I bought this pattern for the skirt; yet to make.

  11. Wow! These look so much better than the ones in the pattern photo. And they look great on you. As I've mentioned before, I can't carry off the slim-legged pant look very well, but I've been seriously considered getting this pattern for the skirt.

  12. These both look great and I must try again with this pattern. I used some stretch woven also, but it had a strong vertical texture and looked terrible with the seaming. So, recycled and I moved onto my next project. Yours are wonderful!!

  19. Awesome trousers. I love the topstitching. I am only resisting buying this pattern by repeating "Shams cuts one size smaller in the back" as a sort of mantra to remind myself that these would not look nearly so good on me. Thank you for vicarious trouser sewing experiences! ;)

  20. I've been eyeing this pattern too--it seems made for you with the slim leg and funky seaming. Not sure it's made for me, but I still want to try it and I have the perfect fabric. Thanks so much for showing us your great versions!

  24. The pants look wonderful on you! I think KT needs to give you a commission on this pattern as you are going to sell a LOT for her. Post something on her website so she can see your beautiful creations.

  25. Lovely pants, I passed right by that pattern, and would never have even thought of it, and they look great on you, I agree with another commenter, better without the cuff.

Damn you 8-). Now there is yet another pattern for me to buy. You really should get commission from pattern companies. Really.

  26. I agree with Rhonda--you should put some photos up on the KT website. Definitely.

  27. Very nice! I really bought this pattern for the skirt but then thought the pants were actually more intriguing. You have tilted the scale toward the pants!

  28. These look so good on you ---You've even got me thinking about slim pants! Love hearing about the girls.

  29. Shams, you definitely are marketing this pattern well. The pattern photo looks like a jegging as Helen said, but your makes look like lovely narrow leg pants. I love both versions, with the crepe version looking more dressy, and the denimn version really fun. The seaming on these is great, and this style looks fantastic on you.

  30. I love the top seaming on the second air especially!

  31. Oh, goodness, these are great. I need to buy this pattern ASAP.

  32. Both of these look wonderful on you, Shams! And great job on the topstitching, too. Looks like there'll be a run on this Vogue pattern next time there's a sale!

  33. Sorry...what?! How did I miss these??? Not just your blog post but also the pattern! What a great eye you have for those!
Both trousers look fantastic on you but the one with the piping is my favourite.
Enjoy your day with your daughter!

  34. Love the fit of your pants. You have the perfect figure for this style. I also love the top. Red is definitely your color. Hope you had a great day with daughter!!

  35. Convinced - I need to sew these pants! They both look fantastic on you. I especially like the denim pair. You always inspire me with your garments - thank you.

  36. Wonderful pants on you, i am certain you will get plenty of great wear out of these......

because i made this pattern myself and it's even more awesome in person ;) You do a great job showing the versatility of this pattern. One can go all fun & funky by emphasizing the topstitching, or whip a pair of great fitting, very comfy 'go anywhere' pants. i made my pair with all the bells and whistles, because i thought they were the cutest things i'd see in years as soon as i saw the pattern!

    Happy Sunday! steph

  37. Oh Shams I love your pants! I snapped up that pattern when it came out, mostly because of the cool skirt. Then I made my Style Arc Wallis pants - a "skinny" pants pattern - and even though I am not skinny they fit well and are so comfortable. I feel so cool when I wear them. So now I am going to give KT's pants with seams a shot. I love the seaming, esp because it's stylish but not gratuitous, as some lagenlook pants are! Brava!! And Happy Thanksgiving! (I thought it was Nov 29 so that's when I'm observing it!)

  38. What a timely post. I had bought some stretch denim to make this pattern, but had started second guessing my decision since the pattern recommends knits. After seeing your great denim pair, I am back on task. Love the interesting tops you wear with your narrow pants.

  39. I love the pants you sewed. They look so great on you. And I love the red top as well.

  44. Just weighing in again on these great pants you've inspired us all to try out! My body shape is the pretty much the opposite of yours, Sham, and I also found success with this pattern more or less out of the envelope... I love the slim, but not "binding", fit and the topstitching is such a fun detail! Thanks again for your wonderful post.
