I want to thank everyone who voted for me in the first challenge! I truly appreciate your support.
I made it through to week 2! Several of my fellow contestants have already posted details about our second challenge, but in case you haven't seen it: We are to purchase and sew the Salme Yoke Dress, which is a digital download:
While I am sure that there are mothers in their mid 50s out there that could rock this dress, I am not one of them! I can see this dress on one of my daughters (ages 18 and 20), but I would never wear it as designed. Even if I could wear that silhouette, there is no activity in my life that requires that style of dress.
Thankfully, we have been given permission to modify the pattern so that it reflects our personality.
I hope to make this pattern into a garment that I will love and wear!
However, this has been a crazy busy week for me, mostly with extra responsibilities at work, but also with some activities outside of work. For example, DD1 leaves for university on Saturday morning and needed some "mom" time. How could I possibly say no to that? As a result, I now have to play catch up!
I am pretty excited about this challenge. So far, at least, this competition has been stimulating my creative juices, though it is sad to lose fellow contestants.
I don't like to leave you empty handed so, until I post my entry in challenge #2 on Sunday or Monday, enjoy this bit of eye candy!
I'm looking forward to seeing your interpretation of this pattern! And your Challenge #1 piece is totally fabulous! Brava!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your take on this design - what a great opportunity to get creative...J
ReplyDeleteoh wow.. The Salme blazer would've been a better bet as there's a lot more room to play around. Can't believe they picked this pattern instead..o0 I have a couple of her patterns and have found them to be a bit on the boxy/wide shouldered/just plain wide-side. Can't wait to see you hack this.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to do something that will not only be interesting, but artistic and true to who you are:) can't wait for the reveal!!!
ReplyDeleteAlright Lady, make this pattern work for the rest of us!
ReplyDeleteWe have no worries about you, that's for sure. That link...a bit of a hint? :-)
ReplyDeleteI know your creativity will make this work for YOU. I sure hope you win. Thanks for the link. Those are some interesting fabulous fashions.
ReplyDeleteWish I could send you a few more hours to each day! But I have confidence that you'll create a great garment. Thanks for the link.

I am so excited to see what you do with this one and how you alter it!! Your jacket in round one was top notch! I agree, it is a bit on the younger side. I find it fascinating to see how a bunch of seamstresses tackle the same pattern, this will be really good!
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued and excited to see what you come up with to make this pattern reflect you and your lifestyle!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on moving to next challenge! I'm anticipating a wonderful creation with this next one. I'm rooting for you!
ReplyDeleteLove the link! Mom time- well great that your DDs want it, so enjoy what you've created with your family. Sometimes working in tight time leads to genius pouring out. You go girl!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this pattern. As is, I would NEVER wear it. At first glance, I could see absolutely nothing to do with this pattern, so I'm eagerly anticipating your version!
ReplyDeleteI saw that next challenge and wondered what you would do with it. Will be so interested to see.
ReplyDeleteYikes!! I would never wear that dress either! But I bet you can think of something -- maybe change it around to wear over leggings and boots??? Make it punk. LOL Good luck and have fun with your mother-daughter time!
ReplyDeleteThat was one of my thoughts when I saw this challenge - it's not for everybody! Personally, though I am in my twenties, I never have much of an occasion to wear summer dresses, so I too am struggling to make this 'mine.' I can't wait to see what you do, because I know you'll make this fabulous!
ReplyDeleteIs it allowed to make it for one of your daughters? A la Project Runway, you'd be making it for your model, and inspired by your muse! When I saw the pattern, I was hoping it was a Fabric Mart/Salme partnership, with contestants gifted this pattern and all of us "viewers" offered a discount.
ReplyDeleteHere's my advice, FWIW: don't drink and sew, it never helps ;)
LOL. Robyn, we are supposed to make all garments for the same person. So, no, I can't make it for one of my daughters unless I do *all* of the garments for the same daughter.
DeleteAs, as DD1 left San Francisco for university (in Oregon) this morning, and DD2 is currently in South Africa, I am now daughter-less. :) Besides, it's much more fun to figure out how to make this work for me!
I'm trying to comprehend why you didn't win challenge #1, but onward.... This new one is really and truly a challenge! Yikes. Even in my teens and 20s I wouldn't have gone near that dress with a ten foot pole. The very first thing I'd want to do would be to add sleeves, but I don't know if that's allowed under the rules. I like PamelaArtsinSF's idea to punk it up. Anyway, it's fun to tag along with your creative mind and like everyone else I can't wait to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! You did a fabulous job on the first challenge. I can't wait to see what you do with the second challenge.
ReplyDeleteAh, can't decide, I like all the comments and suggestions. See, I think you'll do it your way and it would be better than anything I could dream up. I adore your design-ability!

So glad you are allowed to make changes to the pattern to fit your personality because we I say this I said 'the Shams I know would never, ever wear this dress!' Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Knowing you, it will be spectacular!
ReplyDeleteOoh interesting! This is not you, so looking forward to see what you make of it. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteYikes, I'd be pounding my head on my sewing table if this were my challenge but I love your indomitable spirit so you'll make it work!
ReplyDeleteAnother well put together ensemble, love your creative ideas. I voted for you again...Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteLove your creativity. Thanks so much for the "eye candy"; love, love the style!
