Summer Vogues 2013

While I was sitting in a Marine's Club Hotel in downtown San Francisco on Friday morning (along with 84 other sewists) listening to Sandra Betzina speak, the summer Vogue patterns were released to the BMV website. I was sneaking peeks at them on my cell phone. They are also on sale on the Vogue website, through today, Sunday.

But don't rush over to the website, as the patterns I am listing here are all sold out! I have never seen current patterns sell out before. The website was like molasses, even on Friday, but I was lucky to get all three. Either Vogue is printing fewer than normal, or have underestimated our hunger for new good patterns.

Here are the (very few) patterns that got me excited. But first, let me ask, why do the models (in all three designs) look like they should be holding a plaque with their prisoner number on it? Since I am glad to see the designs, I won't complain (too much) about the mugshot-like quality of the photos.

First up, Marcy Tilton's new dress, that she has referred to as "The Shingle Dress" on her blog. One of my sewing friends, Karla Kizer, has already quipped that she'd better be careful when sewing it so she doesn't end up with "Sh*t on a Shingle." This dress is very current and is similar to dresses that have sold well at stores like Anthropologie.

I just love both of Sandra Betzina's new patterns. The first one features some interesting pants. Sandra called these "her version of the harem pant". They have a high "normal" crotch (yay!), and some nice draping towards the hem. I am especially hungering for interesting new pants patterns and can't wait to get these. The top, however, is less than ideal for my busty/hipless shape, but could be fabulous on a less busty pear.

Finally, I just love Sandra Betzina's new duster. I don't wear a lot of dusters, but I may work on changing that. I especially like the button/snap placket on this one.

I was hoping to get some sewing done today, but DD2 just called and asked to get together, so we'll see. It has warmed up again today, after the last few chilly days in SF. I hope it's nice where you are!

  1. I suffered through the slow website on Friday too and bought six patterns - the most I've bought in a long time. I really liked this set of offerings from Vogue. I even liked the poses, more realistic than in the past. I'm not surprised the Marcy patterns sold out because the website has been slow since they announced the new patterns and there's a great sale going on too!

  2. They really need to improve the usability of the website. I have been trying for days to buy some patterns, and have not been able to get the pages to load. I was able to see two patterns today, both sold out. Bummer! And yes, it is gorgeous here. Hard to beat Florida in Spring.

  3. That first dress is fab -- and love the duster too.

  4. I think that the model looks like she just escaped from a prison camp. Talk about skinny!
I couldn't believe that all three patterns that I wanted were sold out. I'll just have to wait for them to restock. I like the duster but not the proportions with the short pants. I would either shorten it or wear it with longer pants.

  5. I bought some patterns from the site, but not any Vogues because the ones I wanted weren't in stock. However, I did happen to go by Hancock's today for thread and found all the new ones in a basket waiting to be stocked. They didn't have the shingle dress in the size I wanted, but they had the Sandra pants and tank. And on sale for $3.99!

  6. Love your choices - when I finally got the pages to load, it was a pleasant surprise to see photos that actually displayed the design features of the new patterns. That duster coat and the harem style pants are fabulous!

  7. Great choices! The Vogue site was not working properly all Saturday long, and when I finally saw it was all good, I went to buy both Rachel Comey´s new patterns and one of them was sold out. Tragic!

  8. I rushed in and bought the new Marcy Tilton pattern in the BVM sale, but most of the new ones left me cold. I did like the new Kay Unger dress but I have soooo many dress patterns I resisted.

  9. I preferred the poses on the new ones as you can see the clothes really clearly, even though they don't make for the most attractive pictures. But I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the patterns themselves. The shingle dress is my favourite but I have something similar in Burda already. I'm not surprised though, the summer collection never works for me. Something to do with living in the cold, damp UK I think!

  11. I tried to buy the same patterns but the website wouldn't cooperate and posted an error message. Then they were posted to be sold out. But, funny thing, they are available today. Could it be that Vogue didn't intend us to buy them at the sale price?

  12. I'm sold on the dress - maybe even the duster. Thanks, Shams! :)

  13. I wonder if the poses are due to complaints about previous photo shoots where the details of the garments couldn't be seen? You also couldn't see how they "hung" or draped on the model (remember those crazy shots with models lying on the floor - feet on the wall - etc.?

  14. I love being part of this sewing/creative world - even if from a distance! Now, I need collective advice. a sewing friend and I are thinking of planning a sewing treat in the USA....we are Australian. So, my friends, where/what would you suggest? Shams post today made me realise that you are all the perfect people to consult!

    1. Hey, Pamela. Are you wanting to take a class while here? There are *many* excellent options for that. Or is this strictly a shopping expedition? There are many options for that, too. It would help to know the parameters. You can email me if you want to chat about it.

  15. I love those new "harem" pants. As long as they're comfortable, they'd be pretty cool!

  16. I love that dress!
I agree that it is great to be able to actually see the garments rather than getting the 'arty' poses that Vogue has favoured of late. I will have to get over to the site and check out the patterns - if they have any left!

  17. Do you think Vogue have altered their photo shoots to suit us bloggers who want 360 degree images - front, back and side - hence the police type photo?
